Why is Abuja called Abuja?

The city of Abuja was founded in 1976 and was officially named the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria (FCT) by the then military dictator General Murtala Muhammed. The name Abuja was derived from an old Hausa word meaning “a resting place” or “a place of safety”.
