About

Elephant Rock, also known as Jabal AlFil, is a natural rock formation near Al-Ula in Saudi Arabia's Al-Madinah Province. Its shape, as the name suggests, resembles an elephant. The form was produced by wind and water erosion working on the stone over millions of years, leaving a sculpted outline that stands about 52 meters high.

What to expect

The rock is a natural monument rather than a built attraction, so a visit is largely about looking, walking around the base and taking in the scale of the formation against the desert landscape. It is one of the best-known landmarks in Al-Ula and is often photographed, so the spot tends to draw visitors who want to see it for themselves.

Around the rock

Elephant Rock fits naturally into a wider trip to Al-Ula, a desert oasis region whose rock formations and valleys make it a destination in their own right. Because the formation sits within this wider landscape, many visitors combine it with other sights in the area rather than making it a stop on its own.
