About
Heredia is a province in the Central Valley of Costa Rica, in Central America, and it is often called the "City of Flowers." Its name carries much of the character visitors notice first: a town of colonial-era architecture, quiet streets and a relaxed pace that sits a short distance from the bustle of San José.
The city is also known as a centre of learning. Several universities are based here, which gives the streets a lively, youthful feel alongside the older buildings. Walking through the centre, you will find cobblestone streets and a friendly local atmosphere that many travellers describe as an authentic taste of Costa Rica.
Coffee and countryside
Heredia sits close to some of the country's well-regarded coffee plantations, so a visit lends itself naturally to a slower look at how coffee is grown and where it comes from. The surrounding countryside changes quickly from town to farmland and hillside.
Gateway to the forest
- Braulio Carrillo National Park lies within reach and protects rainforest that visitors come to explore on foot.
- The aerial tramways of the Central Valley offer a different vantage point over the landscape.
Heredia suits a visitor who wants a base that combines town life, university-town character, coffee country and access to forest in one trip. Plan your days around the activities that interest you most, and allow time simply to wander the streets.
