About
Landes is a department in southwestern France, within the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It stretches from the Atlantic coast inland, and much of its character comes from the forest that covers so much of its land.
A forest by the sea
Landes is known for the largest continuous forest in Western Europe, made up mainly of maritime pine trees. Walking or cycling through it gives a sense of how much of the landscape is shaped by these straight, tall trunks and the soft, resinous ground beneath them. The forest is also tied to the department's long-standing timber and resin industries, which remain an important part of its economy.
Coast and beaches
The Atlantic coastline offers long stretches of sandy beach, a contrast to the quiet of the pine woods just behind the dunes. It makes Landes a natural choice for a visit that combines time on the shore with time among the trees.
Traditional stilt houses
Landes is also home to the traditional stilt houses known as "échasses." Their raised design is a reminder of the way people once lived and worked in this part of the country, and they are among the features that set the area apart.
Planning a visit
Landes suits travellers who want open landscapes, forest paths and a relaxed coastline rather than a dense city itinerary. Visitors interested in the local forest, the beaches and the traditional architecture will find plenty to explore. Checking current conditions and opening arrangements before setting out is worthwhile, especially for specific sites within the department.
