About

Magong is the capital of Penghu County and the main gateway to the Penghu archipelago, a scatter of islands in the Taiwan Strait off the west coast of Taiwan. It is a port town first and foremost, and much of its character comes from that coastal setting.

What to see

The town's best-known landmark is Tianhou Temple, one of Taiwan's oldest temples, dedicated to Mazu, the sea goddess. It is a fitting place to begin, since Mazu is honoured throughout Taiwan's fishing communities and the temple reflects how closely the town has been tied to the sea. The older streets nearby are good for slow wandering, with traditional shopfronts and the everyday rhythm of a working harbour town.

Food and atmosphere

Magong is a practical place to eat fresh seafood, and visitors often plan a meal or two around what the local waters provide. The atmosphere is relaxed and unhurried, which suits a visit that mixes sightseeing with time by the water.

Why visit

  • See a historic temple tied to Taiwan's maritime traditions.
  • Walk the old streets of a port town with a blend of traditional culture and coastal charm.
  • Use Magong as a base for exploring the wider Penghu islands.

Magong works well as a starting point for a trip to the archipelago, offering a manageable town centre, a sense of local history, and easy access to the sea.
