About

Ein mediterraner Inselstaat, bekannt für seine Strände, antiken Ruinen und die geteilte Hauptstadt Nicosia. Reich an Mythologie als Geburtsort der Aphrodite.

Cyprus is an island nation in the eastern Mediterranean, lying off the coasts of Asia and Europe. It is a place where long stretches of coastline sit alongside ancient ruins, and where a good deal of the island's character comes from its layered past and its mythology. Cyprus is also known in its own languages as the Republic of Cyprus, Κύπρος and Kıbrıs.

What draws visitors

  • Beaches: The island's Mediterranean shoreline offers a wide choice of sandy and pebbled bays, suited to a slow beach holiday.
  • Ancient ruins: Archaeological sites scattered across the island mark many centuries of settlement, and they make a rewarding counterpoint to time spent by the sea.
  • Mythology: Cyprus is traditionally described as the birthplace of Aphrodite, a story that colours many visitors' sense of the island's coast and countryside.

Nicosia and the divided capital

The capital, Nicosia, is divided, and this is one of the first things a visitor notices. Its split character gives the city a distinctive atmosphere, shaped by the island's recent history. Spending time in the capital offers a different kind of visit from the beach towns, one focused on streets, neighbourhoods and the question of how a divided city goes about everyday life.

Planning a trip means weighing the two sides of Cyprus: the relaxed coast and the more complicated story of its capital. Many visitors combine both, moving between sea, ruins and city over a stay of a week or more. Before travelling, check current entry and travel arrangements, as they can change.
