About
Carinthia is a state in southern Austria, close to the borders with Italy and Slovenia. It is known as the sunniest of Austria's states, and its lakes and mountains give it a relaxed, warm-weather character that has earned it the nickname "Austria's Riviera."
The lakes and mountains
The region is often described as having more than 1,270 lakes, set between dramatic Alpine peaks. Two of the best known are Lake Wörthersee and Lake Millstätter See. Their waters are clear enough to be inviting for swimming, and both suit sailing and an unhurried afternoon by the shore. The setting feels almost Mediterranean in summer, while the mountains behind remain distinctly Alpine.
What a visit offers
- Swimming and sailing on the larger lakes
- Lakeside walks and time spent simply relaxing by the water
- Alpine scenery in the hills and peaks surrounding the lakes
- A blend of Austrian mountain charm and a more southern, Italian-influenced pace of life
Carinthia suits travellers who want water, mountains and an easygoing atmosphere in one trip. Those who enjoy lakes for their own sake, rather than as a backdrop, will find plenty to fill a stay. Visitors planning a trip should check seasonal conditions and local arrangements before setting out, since these can vary from one lake to another.
