A guided tour of the oldest active cemetery in Montpellier — the Protestant cemetery founded in 1804 — takes place across the heritage weekend of 19–20 September 2026, as part of the Journées européennes du patrimoine.
Founded in 1804, the Protestant cemetery of Montpellier is the oldest cemetery in the city still in active use. This guided tour explores both the grand historical narrative and the intimate personal stories associated with the site.
The tour addresses the Protestant relationship with death, traces the three earlier cemeteries that preceded this one, and examines the periods of clandestinity the community experienced since the Wars of Religion.
Visitors will also discover funerary art and its symbolic vocabulary, notable monuments, and the tombs of several illustrious figures — including that of the painter Frédéric Bazille.
The tour runs over both days of the Journées européennes du patrimoine weekend, 19–20 September 2026.
