About

An pristine archipelago known as the 'Galician Caribbean' with crystal-clear turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and protected wildlife reserves. These car-free islands offer exceptional hiking trails, bird watching, and what many consider Spain's most beautiful beach at Rodas.

The Islas Cíes are an archipelago off the coast of Vigo, in Galicia, in north-western Spain. Locals and travel writers sometimes call them the "Galician Caribbean", a nickname that points to their clear turquoise water and pale sand rather than any tropical setting. The islands are reached by boat from Vigo, and they make a day out of the city rather than a stop on the way somewhere else.

One of the most appealing things about the Cíes is that they are car-free. There are no roads to speak of, so the pace is slow and the landscape feels largely undisturbed. Much of the archipelago is protected as a nature reserve, and the wildlife is a reason many visitors come, with birdwatching a popular pastime for those who bring binoculars.

What to do on the islands

  • Walk the trails. The islands have good hiking routes that take in dunes, cliffs and viewpoints over the sea.
  • Watch the birds. The reserve status of the islands makes them a good place for birdwatching.
  • Swim at the beaches. The water is clear and the sand is white, and the beach at Rodas is often regarded as one of the finest in Spain.

Planning a visit

Because the islands are small and largely unbuilt, it is worth going with a plan rather than expecting to find services on every corner. Bring water, sun protection and suitable footwear for walking. Check boat times in advance, since they determine how long you can stay. Vigo itself offers plenty to see before or after the crossing, so a visit to the islands can be easily combined with time in the city.
