About

Nesraf, a multi-musician group devoted to Algerian Chaâbi and Andalusian music, performs at Balattou in Montréal on October 16, 2026, celebrating a decade of artistic friendship and a musical heritage rooted in the streets, cafés and ceremonies of Algeria.

Nesraf is a Montréal-based ensemble dedicated to Chaâbi and Andalusian music, two intertwined North African and Maghrebi traditions. The name "Nesraf" refers to a rhythmic and melodic movement within these musical forms — the word itself means "departure," evoking generations of immigrants who carried this heritage across the world.

The group brings together several musicians and vocalists, and represents the fruit of over ten years of friendship and artistic collaboration. Their shared passion for Chaâbi music has shaped an ensemble sound that honours the tradition while keeping it alive in diaspora communities.

Chaâbi, the popular music of Algeria, was pioneered and popularised in the 1930s by the legendary El Hadj Mohamed El Anka. It is the music of everyday life — of streets, cafés and celebrations — and Nesraf carries that spirit to the stage.

The group has performed at the 24th edition of the Festival de musique du Maghreb (Nuits d'Afrique), where they had the opportunity to consolidate their identity as an ensemble. The concert takes place at Balattou, Montréal's celebrated world-music club, on Friday, October 16 at 21:00.
