Fujisan Okumiya, also called the Fuji Okumiya or Mount Fuji Summit Shrine, stands at the summit crater of Mount Fuji, at about 3,776 metres above sea level. It is a Shinto shrine and the inner sanctuary of Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha, marking the peak as a sacred place. It lies in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka, in the Chubu Region of Honshu, Japan.

What to expect

The shrine is reached on foot, by climbing the mountain. For many climbers, arriving at the crater and visiting the shrine is the point of completing the ascent, and it draws pilgrims as well as walkers. Visitors should expect a high, exposed setting, with the crater and the wide views that the summit offers.

  • Location: summit crater of Mount Fuji, Fujinomiya, Shizuoka
  • Elevation: approximately 3,776 metres
  • Connected to: Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha
  • Visit type: pilgrimage and mountain climb

Planning the visit

Because the shrine sits at the top of the mountain, the visit is part of a climb rather than a stop on a city itinerary. Those who want to reach it should plan the ascent in advance and prepare for thin air, changing weather and a steep, demanding route. Fujinomiya, at the foot of the mountain on the Shizuoka side, is the nearest town to consider for a base before or after the climb.
