About

Artist-researchers Jo Verwohlt and Pieter Steyaert bring their volumetric light sculpture and sound composition Light Cone to life in a three-act live performance with guitar, cello and data-driven visuals. A particle detector picks up cosmic muons that help set the music's tempo. A 30-minute conversation with astrophysicist Anja C. Andersen follows.

Light Cone is a live audiovisual performance and talk held in Copenhagen, at the Round Tower (Rundetaarn). It brings together a volumetric light sculpture and a sound composition, created by the artist-researchers Jo Verwohlt and Pieter Steyaert, who have worked together at the Niels Bohr Institute for several years. Light Cone is their first major collaborative work.

What the evening is like

The show runs in three acts. Guitar and cello are played live, and the music interacts with imagery generated from data as it unfolds. A particle detector picks up cosmic muons, and those readings help set the tempo of the music, so the rhythm of the performance is tied to particles arriving from space. After the performance, a 30-minute conversation with astrophysicist Anja C. Andersen follows.

Part of a larger exhibition

Light Cone is included in the exhibition Light Echoes, which explores how we perceive light and understand time. Standard admission covers the event, and the ticket also gives access to Light Echoes and to the exhibition Ole Rømer and the Great Discovery. Tickets must be booked in advance. The programme is part of LIGHT YEAR 2026, which marks the 350th anniversary of Ole Rømer's discovery that light has a finite speed.

Around the Round Tower

  • Visitors can climb the Spiral Ramp to the top of the tower and watch the sunset over Copenhagen.
  • The evening suits anyone curious about the meeting point of art, music and physics.
