About

Archipel espagnol au large des côtes du Maroc caractérisé par des paysages volcaniques, un climat subtropical et des destinations touristiques populaires incluant Tenerife et Gran Canaria.

The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, lying off the coast of Morocco. Although they belong to Spain and form one of its autonomous communities, they sit geographically closer to Africa than to the Spanish mainland, and that location gives them a character of their own.

What a visit offers

The islands are known for their volcanic landscapes. Dark lava fields, rugged cliffs and steep slopes shape much of the scenery, and the varied terrain means that a short drive can take you from barren volcanic ground to green hillsides and sandy coastline. The subtropical climate is a large part of the appeal, with mild temperatures that make the islands a practical choice for visitors at many times of year.

Two of the islands attract the most travellers. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are the popular tourist destinations, with a good range of beaches, resorts, towns and walking routes. Each island has its own mix of landscapes and atmosphere, so it is worth deciding which kind of holiday you want before choosing where to base yourself.

Planning your trip

  • Choose an island according to the landscape and pace you prefer, since each has a distinct feel.
  • Allow time to explore beyond the coast, where the volcanic interior is often the most striking part of the scenery.
  • Remember that the climate is subtropical, so the islands suit a wide range of seasons for outdoor activity.

For visitors who enjoy dramatic natural scenery combined with a mild climate and easy access from Europe, the Canary Islands make a rewarding destination.
