How was travel in the middle ages?

Travel in the Middle Ages was often slow, difficult, and dangerous. Roads were generally in poor condition and not well maintained, and travel by foot or horse was often the only option. In addition, travelers were often vulnerable to bandits, robbers, and other criminals who often preyed upon those on the roads. Travel by sea was also dangerous, and storms, pirates, and disease were constant threats.
