| Desertification

One of the topographical causes of deserts is called what?

The most common topographical cause of deserts is called a rain shadow effect. This occurs when a mountain range blocks the path of moist air, causing it to drop its moisture on the windward side of the mountain range. The leeward side of the mountain range, or the side facing away from the wind, is left with very little rainfall and is thus prone to desertification.
