What's the origin of chocolate?

The origin of chocolate dates back to the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica. It is believed that chocolate was first consumed in liquid form by the Olmec people as early as 1900 BC. The Mayans and Aztecs then began to cultivate the cacao tree and use its seeds to make a bitter, frothy drink. The drink, known as xocolātl, was highly valued and used for both medicinal and religious purposes.
