Why is Abuja the capital of Nigeria?

Abuja was selected as the new capital of Nigeria in 1976 by the government of General Murtala Mohammed in a bid to move the capital away from the coastal city of Lagos which was becoming increasingly crowded. The location of Abuja in the center of the country was chosen to promote national unity and provide an easily accessible location for all parts of the country. Abuja has since become a hub of economic and political activity for Nigeria.
