Why is it called sphinx?

The Great Sphinx of Giza is a large limestone statue of a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human. It is believed to have been built around 2500 BC for the Pharaoh Khafre, the builder of the second pyramid at Giza. The name "Sphinx" is derived from the Greek word "sphinx" which means "strangler" or "tightener".
