About

Idrija is a town in western Slovenia, set in a narrow valley of the Idrijca river. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its story is shaped by one resource: mercury. For centuries the town's fortune came from mining it, and that history is still visible both underground and in the streets above.

Below the surface

The mine shafts are the reason many visitors come. Guided tours take you into the historic workings, where you can see how the mining community lived and worked. The underground world is quite different from the town above, and the tours give a clear sense of the labour that built Idrija. Wear something warm and sturdy, as the galleries stay cool year-round.

Above ground

Idrija's centre keeps much of its medieval architecture, and walking through the older streets is an easy way to spend an afternoon. The town also keeps alive a handmade bobbin lace tradition, passed down through generations. Lace-making is practised here as a living craft, and the workshops offer a chance to watch it being made and, in some cases, to try it yourself.

What to expect

  • A mining museum that explains the town's industrial past
  • Guided tours of the historic mine shafts
  • Lace-making workshops that continue the local bobbin lace tradition
  • A compact town centre with well-preserved older buildings

Idrija suits visitors interested in industrial heritage, traditional crafts or simply a slower pace in the Slovenian countryside. Plan for a day or two, and check ahead for current tour and workshop arrangements before you travel.
