About
Tangente is a dance presenter and performance space in Montreal, known for contemporary and experimental dance. Founded in 1980, it was the first organization in Québec to specialize in the presentation of dance, and it has long championed emerging choreographers alongside more established names.
Its programming runs from September to May and tends toward the interdisciplinary and the experimental, so a visit is less likely to be a conventional evening of classical ballet and more likely to be an encounter with work that questions what dance can be. Those who enjoy new ideas in movement, staging and collaboration will find it a fitting place to spend an evening.
Where to find it
Tangente is currently based in Édifice Wilder, in the Quartier des spectacles, a renovated building it has occupied since 2017. The building also houses Agora de la danse, the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal and Les Grands Ballets, so the surroundings are very much a dance hub. The venue is on rue De Bleury, close to the heart of the city's cultural district, which makes it easy to combine a performance with a walk through the neighbourhood.
Before you go
Because the season runs from September to May, check what is being staged during your stay, as the programme changes from one season to the next. Tangente also has a café-bar on site, and according to its Facebook page, drinks ordered there help support the organization, which makes a pause before or after a show a pleasant and worthwhile extra.
