About
Kaunos is a heritage site of ancient ruins near Dalyan, on the Turkish Aegean and Mediterranean coast. It is a place where several civilizations left their mark in one landscape: the Lycians, the Carians and the Romans each appear among the remains.
What to see
The most striking feature is the group of rock tombs carved into the cliffside. They rise above the site and are well preserved, and they give the visit its dramatic character. Below them, the ruins include an ancient theater, Roman baths and a basilica, so the walk moves through several periods of the site's past.
The setting
From the ruins you can take in wide views over the Dalyan Delta. The surrounding area is also known for its loggerhead turtle nesting beaches, which add a natural dimension to a trip here.
Who it suits
- Visitors interested in layered ancient history, from Lycian and Carian to Roman
- Those who enjoy archaeological sites set in open, scenic country
- Travellers already staying in or passing through Dalyan, which makes a convenient base for the visit
Kaunos works well as a half-day outing: allow time to climb among the cliff tombs, walk through the theater and baths, and pause for the views across the delta.
