About
Lugo is a city in Galicia, in the north-west of Spain, and the capital of its province. Its defining feature is its Roman walls, which still encircle the old town almost in full. The fortifications are complete enough that Lugo is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage city, and walking the wall is the most distinctive thing a visitor can do here.
What to see
- The Roman walls: a continuous circuit around the historic centre, best explored on foot along the top, with views over the city inside and out.
- The old town: a compact network of streets within the walls, where the city's life has long been centred.
- The surrounding province: Galicia's green landscapes and rural roads begin just beyond the city limits.
What kind of visit it makes
Lugo suits a relaxed visit rather than a rushed one. The walls can be walked at an easy pace, and the historic centre is small enough to explore without much planning. It works well as a stop on a wider journey through Galicia, or as a destination in its own right for those interested in ancient architecture and the way a city has grown up around its defences.
Because the old town sits inside the walls, many of the city's sights are close together, and an afternoon can easily be spent moving between the ramparts and the streets below. Visitors who enjoy history set in a living, everyday city will find Lugo a clear and rewarding choice.
