About

The French Southern and Antarctic Lands (Terres australes et antarctiques françaises) is an overseas collectivity of France, administered from abroad rather than from the European mainland. It brings together several remote island groups in the southern Indian Ocean together with a claimed sector of the Antarctic continent, Adélie Land.

What the territory includes

  • The Crozet Islands, a subantarctic group in the southern Indian Ocean.
  • The Kerguelen Islands, a larger island group in the same ocean.
  • Amsterdam and Saint Paul Islands, two small subantarctic islands.
  • Adélie Land, the French sector of the Antarctic continent.

Together these places are spread across a very large area of ocean and ice, and none of them has a permanent population in the way a mainland town does. Their main role is scientific research, and most of the people present are there for work at research stations.

What a visit is like

This is not a destination for a conventional holiday. Access is limited and depends on research supply and transport links, so anyone interested should check current arrangements with the territory's administration before making plans. What you can expect is a landscape shaped by isolation: wide oceans, subantarctic islands and polar ice, with the quiet and weather that come with such remote places.

Visitors who are drawn to polar and subantarctic science, or who want to understand how France maintains a presence in these far corners of the world, will find the territory of particular interest. For most other travellers, it is best appreciated from afar, through the research and natural history it supports.
