About
The Jade Emperor Pagoda, also known as Chua Ngoc Hoang, Phuoc Hai Temple or the Tortoise Pagoda, is a Taoist temple at 73 Mai Thi Luu in Da Kao, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It was built in 1909, and it remains one of the city's most atmospheric religious sites.
What to expect
The temple is filled with statues of Buddhist and Taoist deities, many of them shrouded in incense smoke. The air is thick and fragrant, and the dim interiors give the place a quiet, mysterious feel. Visitors who come to look rather than to pray can spend a relaxed half hour moving slowly from hall to hall.
Good to know before you go
- Dress modestly and keep your voice low, as this is a working place of worship.
- Expect smoke and crowds at busy times, especially when worshippers are making offerings.
- Take care with photography and be respectful around people praying.
