About
East Peak, also known as Chaoyang Peak or Sunrise Peak, is one of the summits of Huashan, a mountain in Huayin City, Weinan, in Shaanxi Province, China. It is the place to come for sunrise views, and it is best reached early in the day so you can see the sky change over the surrounding peaks.
What to expect
The peak is known for its wide outlook at dawn, when the light moves across the mountain ridges. The route up is steep and demanding, and parts of it are narrow, so comfortable footwear and a steady pace are sensible. Many visitors plan the day around the summit and the time they reach it.
- Sunrise views that draw visitors to the summit before dawn
- The Changkong Plank Walk, a famously exposed route that is only for those comfortable with heights
- A chess pavilion where a local legend says a Taoist immortal played chess with the Emperor
Planning your visit
Because the peak sits on a mountain, the walk to it is part of the experience. Allow time for the climb, for the summit itself, and for the descent. The Changkong Plank Walk is the element most likely to make a visit memorable, but it also demands care, so think honestly about your comfort with heights before you go.
Huayin City lies at the foot of Huashan, and the wider area is the base for exploring the mountain and its neighbouring summits. The pavilion and the legend attached to it add a cultural thread to a visit that is otherwise centred on landscape and the early-morning light.
