About

Jajce is a town in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, set in the hills of Europe's Balkan interior. It is best known for its medieval character, its hilltop fortress and a waterfall that runs right through the town centre, which together make it one of the more distinctive places to stop in the country.

The town and its fortress

The fortress stands above the confluence of two rivers and dates from the 14th century. Climbing up to it gives views over the town, the water and the surrounding countryside. Jajce was once the capital of the Bosnian Kingdom, and that past is still visible in the old walls and the layout of the streets below.

The waterfall

The town's most striking feature is its waterfall, about 20 metres high, which drops through the centre of Jajce. Because it is so close to the streets and buildings, it shapes the feel of the place: you can walk along the water and see it from many angles without leaving town.

What a visit offers

  • Medieval fortress architecture above the rivers
  • Underground catacombs to explore
  • Ancient churches within the town
  • Natural scenery of rivers, waterfall and surrounding hills

Jajce suits visitors who enjoy history combined with landscape. Plan time for the fortress climb, for wandering the old town, and for simply watching the water, since the setting rewards a slower pace.
