About
Jahorina is a mountain in Bosnia and Herzegovina, about 30 kilometers from Sarajevo. It is the country's best-known ski resort and hosted alpine events at the 1984 Winter Olympics, which gives it a place in the sporting history of the region.
A winter destination
Jahorina is built for skiing. The resort offers modern ski facilities and a range of slopes, so both beginners and more experienced skiers can find a run to suit them. Snow conditions are generally good through the winter season, which makes it a dependable choice for a snow trip. Its proximity to Sarajevo means a day on the slopes is easy to combine with time in the city.
A summer walking area
When the snow melts, the mountain takes on a different character. Forests and meadows open up across the slopes, and traditional mountain huts are scattered through the landscape. Hiking here is a quiet, green alternative to the winter visit, and a good way to spend a day in the open air.
Planning a visit
- Allow a day or more for the mountain, depending on whether you ski or walk.
- Sarajevo is the natural base, as the mountain lies within easy reach of the city.
- Pack for the season: the mountain's conditions differ sharply between winter and summer.
