About
Ios is an island in the Cyclades, in Greece, and it is known above all for its lively nightlife and its clean, sandy beaches. Many young travellers come here for the social side of island life, but the island has more to offer than its party reputation suggests.
The landscape and the villages
The island has the classic Cycladic look: white-washed villages set against dramatic hills, with golden sands below. Chora, the main town, sits on a hilltop, and its narrow lanes and whitewashed houses reward a slow walk. Away from the busier spots you can find quiet traditional settlements, where the pace of life feels much gentler.
Beaches and evenings
Mylopotas Beach is the island's best-known stretch of sand, with bars and cafés along the shore and enough space to find a quieter corner. It suits a day of swimming and rest, and it leads naturally into the evening, when the island's bars and clubs come alive.
Ios also has ancient ruins to explore and some of the Aegean's most beautiful sunsets, which many visitors make a point of watching from the hills above the town.
What kind of visit it makes
- Lively nights for those who want music and company
- Calm beach days at Mylopotas and other shores
- Walks through hilltop Chora and the quieter villages
- Historic sites and some of the island's finest evening views
Ios works well for travellers who want to balance relaxation with entertainment, and who are happy to move between a busy evening in town and a quiet morning by the sea.
