Kenroku-en is one of Japan's Three Great Gardens, set in the city of Kanazawa in the Chubu Region. It lies at 1 Kenroku-machi, Kanazawa, Ishikawa, and it is known in Japanese as 兼六園. The garden was originally the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle, and its grounds still sit beside the castle site.

What to expect

The garden is known for its classical landscape design, with paths, ponds and carefully arranged views that unfold as you walk. Ancient trees stand throughout the grounds, giving the place a sense of age and stillness. Visitors often come to see how the scenery changes through the year, since the garden is admired for its beauty in all four seasons.

Planning a visit

  • Setting: an urban park in the heart of Kanazawa, so it is easy to combine with other stops in the city.
  • Time of year: the garden is appreciated across every season, so the best time depends on the kind of scenery you prefer.
  • Contact: you can reach the garden by phone at +81-76-234-3800 for up-to-date details before you go.

Because the garden grew out of the castle's outer grounds, a walk here pairs naturally with a visit to the castle area nearby. It makes a calm, unhurried part of a day spent exploring Kanazawa.
