Gamzigrad-Romuliana is a heritage site in Serbia, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage property. It preserves the remains of a Roman imperial palace complex built by Emperor Galerius in the 3rd century, and it is one of the places in Europe where the scale and planning of late Roman architecture can still be read on the ground.

What you can see

  • Fortifications, which remain in notably good condition and give a clear sense of the complex's outline and defences.
  • Residential quarters, showing how the imperial household and attendants were housed within the walls.
  • Temples, which reflect the religious life of the palace and the grandeur the builders intended.
  • Mosaics and sculptures, which offer a window onto everyday imperial life and the artistic taste of the period.

What kind of visit it makes

This is a site for slow walking rather than a quick stop. Allow time to move between the fortifications, the living quarters and the temples, and to look closely at the mosaics and sculpture. It suits visitors interested in ancient history, Roman architecture, or archaeology, and those who enjoy seeing ruins that retain their layout and structure rather than only scattered fragments.

Because the palace is an archaeological landscape, expect open-air exploration and uneven ground. Check current access arrangements before you travel, as opening times and facilities are not covered here.
