About

Elvas is a fortress town in the Alentejo region of Portugal, close to the border with Spain. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its defences are the main reason people come. The town holds what is described as the largest bulwarked fortification system in the world, with star-shaped walls and impressive bastions that still shape the way the place is laid out.

What to see

  • The walls and bastions. Walking the ramparts gives a clear sense of how the town was built to be defended, with the star-shaped outline visible from the high points.
  • The historic centre. Cobblestone streets lead past traditional whitewashed houses, a setting that suits a slow, unhurried walk.
  • The Amoreira Aqueduct. This striking structure stands out among the town's historic features and is a highlight for many visitors.

What kind of visit it makes

Elvas suits history enthusiasts and anyone interested in military architecture. Much of the appeal lies in simply wandering: the scale of the fortifications, the quiet of the old streets and the views from the walls reward time spent on foot. Because the town sits near the Spanish border, it can also work well as a stop on a longer journey through the Alentejo or across the frontier.

If you plan to go, allow a few hours at least to see the walls, the centre and the aqueduct at a comfortable pace. Check opening times for any sites you wish to enter before you travel, as these can vary.
