About

西藏最神圣的佛教寺庙,建于7世纪,被视为藏传佛教的精神中心。这座寺庙吸引了成千上万的朝圣者在其周围进行五体投地的朝拜。

Jokhang Temple stands in the old centre of Lhasa, on Barkhor Street in Chengguan District, in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Also known as Qoikang Monastery and in Chinese as 大昭寺, it is widely regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple in Tibet, and it is often described as the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism.

The temple was built in the 7th century. Its age and reputation make it one of the central places in the region's religious life, and visitors feel that weight as soon as they reach its doors.

What to expect

The temple draws thousands of pilgrims, and many of them perform prostrations around its perimeter. Watching this slow, steady devotion is one of the most memorable parts of a visit. Visitors who come to observe should keep to the paths, move quietly, and avoid interrupting people at prayer.

  • A living place of worship, not only a monument to be viewed from outside.
  • Pilgrims circling the temple at all hours, often in traditional dress.
  • Barkhor Street around it, lined with shops and stalls that give the area its lively character.

Around the temple

Because the temple sits in the middle of the old town, a visit fits easily into a walk through Barkhor Street, where the circuit of pilgrims and the rhythm of daily market life meet. Allow time to wander the surrounding lanes as well as the temple itself.
