About
Jongmyo Shrine sits in the centre of Seoul at 157 Jong-ro, Jongno-gu, and is also known as the Royal Ancestral Shrine. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and served as the royal ancestral shrine of the Joseon Dynasty, a place where the kings and queens of that line were honoured after death.
What you will see
The shrine is a Confucian site built to house the spirit tablets of the deceased royals. Its long, low halls and open courtyards reflect the quiet, orderly character of Confucian ritual architecture, and walking through them gives a clear sense of how the dynasty understood its ancestors and its own place in history.
What makes a visit distinctive
- It is a working ceremonial site, where the annual Jongmyo Daeje ceremony is held.
- Its setting is a calm contrast to the busy streets of central Seoul.
- It suits visitors interested in Korean history, Confucian tradition, and royal heritage.
Because the shrine sits in the Jongno district, it pairs well with other sights in the old centre of the city. Allow time to walk slowly, read the signs, and consider the ceremonial character of the grounds as you go.
