About
The Iglesia de La Merced, also known as the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, is a colonial church in the historic centre of Quito, on the corner of Chile and Cuenca streets. It belongs to the Mercedarian order and dates from the 16th century, so it is one of the older religious buildings a visitor will meet while walking the old city.
What to look for
- The baroque tower. It is the tallest tower of any colonial church in Quito, and it is the feature most visitors notice first from the surrounding streets.
- The interior. The church is known for its ornate decoration, typical of the colonial religious style of the region.
- The statue of the Virgin of Mercy. The image of Our Lady of Mercy, the church's namesake, is the focus of devotion here.
Because the church is a working place of worship, it is best approached quietly, with respect for any services or prayers under way.
Visiting the area
The church sits within the old town, where colonial streets, plazas and other churches are within easy walking distance. Many visitors combine a stop here with a wider stroll through the historic centre, allowing time to step inside, look up at the tower and take in the surrounding streets.
