About
La Paz is a city in western Bolivia, in the La Paz Department of South America. It sits high in a deep valley, with tall mountains rising around it, so the streets often climb steeply from the valley floor toward the edges. The city is also known by its full name, Nuestra Señora de La Paz, and by the Aymara name Chuqi Yapu.
What a visit offers
Visitors come for the street markets, which are colorful and busy, and for the chance to see traditional culture alongside modern city life. Everyday routines here mix old customs with contemporary habits, and that blend is much of what makes the city interesting to walk through.
The views are a major part of the experience. From many points in the city you can see the Andes, and the mountains give the place its character, whether you are looking down into the valley or out across the surrounding peaks.
Planning your trip
