About
Gamle Scene, which means "The Old Stage" in Danish, is the historic main stage of the Royal Danish Theatre (Det Kongelige Teater). It stands on Kongens Nytorv 9 in central Copenhagen, a grand neoclassical building dating back to 1874. It is one of the city's most recognisable cultural landmarks, and a visit here is as much about the building as the performance.
What to expect inside
The venue is known for its gilded decorations and painted ceilings. The main hall seats about 1,400 people and is furnished with a red curtain, decorated balconies and chandeliers. Seated in the auditorium, you are surrounded by the kind of ornate interior that suits the theatre's long tradition.
The stage hosts a range of performances, including ballet, opera and drama. Whatever the programme, the atmosphere is formal in a relaxed way, and the building itself gives an evening a sense of occasion.
Planning your visit
The foyers open one hour before a performance, giving you time to look around before the curtain rises. During the interval, the foyer bars are available. The venue's foyers include the Balkonfoyer and the Holberg Lounge, which can also be booked for private events.
