About
Kumbhalgarh Fort stands in the hills of Rajsamand district in Rajasthan, India, at the village of Kumbhalgarh. It is a fortress dating from the 15th century, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, set within a wildlife sanctuary that bears its name.
What to expect
The fort is known above all for its wall. Its ramparts are often described as the second-longest wall in the world, after the Great Wall of China. Walking along the top of it gives a sense of the scale of the defences and of the rugged country they were built to guard. Views stretch out over the surrounding hills and forest.
Because the fort lies inside a wildlife sanctuary, the setting feels quite different from a city monument. The landscape is green and wooded, and the visit suits people who enjoy being outdoors as well as looking at old stonework.
