About
The Colonial Architecture District occupies the historic heart of Île de Saint-Louis, the island city of Saint-Louis in Senegal. It is also known as the Historic Quarter or the Quartier Colonial, and it is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
What you will see
The district is made up of well-preserved French colonial buildings, many of them set along streets laid out in the 19th century. Visitors tend to notice the distinctive balconies and facades, which give the streets their character. Walking through the quarter gives a clear sense of how the island was planned, with its urban layout still legible today.
What kind of visit it makes
- A slow walk through the historic streets, best suited to unhurried exploration.
- An interest in colonial-era urban planning and architecture.
- A way to understand the island as a whole, since the district forms its historic centre.
Because the quarter is the historic core of the island, it works well as a starting point for exploring the rest of Saint-Louis on foot, with its waterfront and everyday life close at hand.
