About
French Valley is a valley in the Torres del Paine area, and it forms part of the W Circuit. Visitors who cannot manage the full trek can still make it a worthwhile outing on its own, as a day hike.
The trail runs through a dramatic valley ringed by granite spires and hanging glaciers. The scenery changes as you climb, and the sense of enclosure by tall rock and ice is the main draw of the walk.
What the walk offers
- A route through a steep, granite-walled valley
- Views of hanging glaciers and spires along the way
- A viewpoint with 360-degree panoramas at the end of the climb
- A day-long outing that does not require the full multi-day circuit
The viewpoint is the point where the effort pays off. From there you can see the surrounding peaks and ice in every direction, which makes it a good place to stop, rest and take in the scale of the landscape before turning back.
Planning a visit
Because French Valley is a hike rather than a built attraction, it suits people who enjoy walking in open country and are comfortable with a sustained climb. It is best approached with sturdy footwear, warm layers and plenty of water and food, since weather in the mountains can change quickly. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
For many visitors, French Valley is one of the most memorable walks in the park, and it rewards a full day spent on the trail.
