About

Guatavita is a small Andean town in Colombia, set among green mountains a short way from Bogotá. It is known above all for its link to El Dorado, the legend of a gold-covered ruler that drew explorers to South America for centuries. Nearby Lake Guatavita was the sacred site where Muisca chiefs made gold offerings to their gods, and the lake and its story are the reason many visitors come.

The town

The town as it stands today is a reconstruction. The original settlement was flooded, and a new colonial-style town was built in its place. Its whitewashed walls and red-tiled roofs give it a calm, orderly look, and the mountain setting makes the streets pleasant to wander. It suits a slow day rather than a packed itinerary.

The lake and the surroundings

Lake Guatavita sits in a crater and has a mystical quality that suits its history. Visitors can walk around the area, take in the views, and think about the ceremonies once held there. The landscape around the town is open and green, with the cool air typical of the Andes.

Planning a visit

  • Allow at least half a day to see the town and the lake at an unhurried pace.
  • Bring warm layers, since mountain weather can change quickly.
  • Combine the trip with other destinations in the area if you are travelling from Bogotá.

For visitors interested in the history of the Muisca and the El Dorado legend, Guatavita offers a rare chance to stand where those stories began.
