About

日本最古老的神道神社之一,可追溯至3世纪。位于神户市中心,供奉着稚日女尊女神。

Ikuta Shrine (also known as Ikuta-san) is a Shinto shrine in the heart of Kobe, in Japan's Kansai Region. It sits at 1-2-1 Shimoyamate-dori in Chuo-ku, close to the city centre, which makes it an easy stop for anyone already exploring Kobe on foot.

The shrine is one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines, with its origins traced back to the 3rd century. It is dedicated to the goddess Wakahirume-no-Mikoto, and for many visitors that long continuity is the main draw: a place of worship that has stayed in the middle of a busy modern city for a very long time.

What to expect

A visit to Ikuta Shrine is best suited to a slow, unhurried walk rather than a long excursion. Plan a short stop to see the grounds, take in the atmosphere of a working shrine, and observe the quiet rhythm of people coming to pray. As with any active place of worship, visitors are asked to behave respectfully.

Around the shrine

  • Its central location means it can be combined easily with other parts of downtown Kobe.
  • It works well as a contrast to the city's modern streets and shopping districts nearby.
  • Visitors interested in Japanese religious traditions will find it a useful introduction to Shinto practice in an urban setting.

For practical questions before you go, the shrine can be reached by telephone at +81-78-321-3851.
