About
Kobe Chinatown, known locally as Nankinmachi, is one of the three major Chinatowns in Japan. It sits on Sakaemachi-dori in Chuo-ku, Kobe, in the Kansai Region of Japan, a short walk from the city centre.
The district is lively and colourful, with more than 100 shops and restaurants lining its streets. Much of the appeal is in the food: visitors can find authentic Chinese cuisine ranging from quick street snacks to sit-down meals, and browsing the stalls and shopfronts is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
What a visit offers
- Wandering the narrow, decorated streets and taking in the district's atmosphere
- Sampling Chinese dishes in its many restaurants
- Shopping in the stores that line the main lanes
- Experiencing a part of Kobe shaped by its long Chinese community
Planning your trip
Because the district is compact, it works well as a stop within a longer day in Kobe, and it pairs easily with other places in the city and the wider Kansai area. Wear comfortable shoes, arrive with an appetite, and allow time to explore at an unhurried pace. For questions before you visit, the district can be reached by phone at +81-78-332-2896.
