Jesi is a medieval town in the Marche region of central Italy, set in the hills of the Italian Adriatic side. It is best known as the birthplace of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, a figure whose name still echoes through its streets and squares, and as a centre for the production of Verdicchio wine.

What to see

The town's medieval character is easy to read in its layout. Its well-preserved Renaissance walls frame the old centre, and within them stand elegant palazzos that reflect the civic life of earlier centuries. The Palazzo della Signoria is one of the features visitors tend to remember, and it makes a natural focal point for a walk through the historic core.

Because Jesi is compact, much of it can be explored on foot. Taking time to wander without a fixed route tends to suit the place best, letting you notice doorways, courtyards and the rhythm of a town that has grown over many centuries.

Wine and the countryside

Verdicchio is the wine that most closely connects Jesi to the surrounding landscape, and local wineries offer tastings for visitors. A tasting here is a good way to understand the area's agriculture and to take home a sense of the place. Many visitors combine a town visit with a drive or walk into the surrounding countryside.

Is it worth the trip?

Jesi suits travellers who enjoy medieval and Renaissance towns that are not crowded, who are interested in Italian history, and who like pairing a city walk with a glass of local wine. If you are touring the Marche, it makes a relaxed and rewarding stop. Those who prefer large attractions and a busy nightlife may find it quieter than they expect, which for many visitors is exactly its appeal.
