About

Damlatas Cave lies in Alanya, on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, and is a limestone cave known for the stalactites and stalagmites that have formed inside it over a very long period. The formations give the interior the feel of an underground cathedral, and the walk through its chambers is a calm, atmospheric way to spend part of a visit to the area.

What to expect inside

The cave is valued for its stable conditions. The air is kept at a constant temperature of about 22°C throughout the year, with humidity around 95%. Visitors should expect a cool, damp atmosphere that stays much the same whatever the weather outside.

  • Stalactites hanging from the ceiling and stalagmites rising from the floor, shaped over thousands of years
  • A steady temperature, which makes it a comfortable refuge from the summer heat outside
  • Humid, still air that many people with respiratory complaints such as asthma are said to find beneficial

Planning your visit

Damlatas works well as a short break from the beach or the town, since the cave's conditions are the same at any time of year. Because the chambers are underground and the air is very humid, it is sensible to wear comfortable footwear and a light layer. If you have a respiratory condition, check with your doctor before relying on the cave's air as part of any treatment.

Alanya itself offers a castle on its headland, harbour areas and a long stretch of coast, so the cave pairs easily with time in the old town or by the sea. It suits visitors who enjoy geological sights, quieter places, and a change of pace from sunshine and open spaces.
