About

The American Swedish Institute, often called ASI, is a cultural center and museum in Minneapolis, Minnesota, devoted to Swedish-American heritage. It is located at 2600 Park Avenue, in the Minneapolis neighborhood that has long been home to many visitors interested in the region's Scandinavian roots.

The building

The institute is housed in the historic Turnblad Mansion, a grand residence that gives the visit much of its character. Walking through its rooms is a way to see how a home of its era was furnished and decorated, and the setting frames the exhibitions in a way a modern gallery could not. A contemporary addition sits alongside the mansion, so the visit moves between the old and the new.

What you can see

The collection and programming focus on Swedish art, design, and culture, with a particular eye on the Swedish experience in America. Exhibitions change over time, so what you find on one visit may differ from the next. Visitors interested in Scandinavian design, decorative arts, or the immigrant story of the Midwest will likely find the most to engage with.
