About

Bock Casemates, also known as the Casemates du Bock, are a set of underground tunnels and galleries carved into the sandstone cliffs of Luxembourg City. They sit in the historic Bock promontory above the Alzette valley, at 10 Montée de Clausen, 1343 Luxembourg City.

The site is a UNESCO World Heritage property and an attraction for anyone interested in the city's fortifications. Its galleries date from the 17th century, when they formed part of the defences of the fortress. During wartime, the passages once sheltered thousands of people, which gives the visit a strong sense of how the city lived through conflict.

What a visit is like

Walking through the casemates means moving through cool, enclosed stone passages cut directly into the rock. The scale of the workings is the main draw, and the contrast between the carved sandstone and the open views from the cliff edge is striking. It suits visitors who enjoy heritage sites, military history and architecture rather than a quick stop.

Around the site

  • The Bock sits on the old city fortifications, so walking along the cliff gives views over the Alzette valley.
  • The historic centre of Luxembourg City is within easy reach, with its squares, churches and museums.
  • Pairing the casemates with a walk through the Grund district below makes a varied half-day.
