About
Campanile is a bell tower in Central, Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. It stands on Strand Street, close to the city's harbour and Algoa Bay, and rises to about 53 metres, making it a landmark that can be seen from much of the surrounding area.
What it commemorates
The tower was built to mark the landing of the British Settlers in Algoa Bay in 1820. It is a monument to that arrival, and visitors come as much for the story and the structure as for the setting.
Visiting the tower
Visitors can climb to the top, where the reward is a panoramic view over the city and the harbour. For anyone who wants to understand how Gqeberha sits along the bay, the vantage point makes the layout of the town and its working port easy to follow.
Around the monument
- Central, the historic core of the city, is within walking distance.
- The harbour and the bay lie close by, so a visit can be combined with time on the waterfront.
- Strand Street itself gives a sense of the city's older commercial centre.
Campanile suits a visitor who wants a short, focused stop with a clear view and a connection to the city's early history. To check the current arrangements for climbing the tower, you can call +27 41 585 8884 before you go.
