About
The Castillo de San Antón stands on a small island at the edge of A Coruña, on the Galician coast of north-west Spain. It is a 16th-century fortress, and today it houses the city's Archaeological and Historical Museum. Its full name is also given as the Castle of San Antón.
The setting
The castle sits on its own island, joined to the mainland by a causeway, so the walk out to it is part of the visit. Its address is Paseo Alcalde Francisco Vázquez, 2, in the 15001 postcode area, which places it within easy reach of the city centre.
What to expect
Visitors come for two things at once:
- The fortress itself, built in the 16th century and still recognisable as a defensive island castle.
- The museum, the Archaeological and Historical Museum of A Coruña, which tells the story of the city and the region through its collections.
The combination of an old fortified island and a museum inside it makes this a good stop for anyone interested in history, whether or not they plan to spend a full day in the city.
Planning the visit
For opening times, admission details and other current information, the castle can be reached by telephone at +34 981 189 850. Since the site is on an island, it is worth allowing time for the causeway and for looking around the fortress and the museum at a relaxed pace. The surrounding seafront of A Coruña gives plenty to see before or after the visit.
