About

Historische Festung mit Blick auf die Bucht von Santiago de Cuba, erbaut 1643 zur Verteidigung gegen Piraten. UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe mit beeindruckendem Ausblick auf die Karibik.

Castillo del Morro, also known as El Morro or the Fortaleza de San Pedro de la Roca, is a historic fortress on a headland overlooking the bay of Santiago de Cuba, in Santiago de Cuba Province. It sits along the Carretera del Morro, about 7.5 kilometres from the city centre, and it is one of the best-known landmarks in this part of the island.

The fortress and its purpose

The castle was built in 1643 to defend the harbour against pirates, who were a constant threat to Spanish towns in the Caribbean at the time. Its position at the entrance to the bay gave its defenders a clear view of approaching ships, and the thick stone walls and gun positions still show how the site was meant to work. It is now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What a visit offers

  • Commanding views across the bay and out over the Caribbean Sea.
  • The chance to walk the old fortifications and imagine how the site once guarded the city.
  • A setting that suits a half-day trip, especially for those interested in colonial military history or in coastal scenery.

Because the fortress is outside the city, it makes sense to plan transport in advance. The drive along the coast is part of the appeal, and the view from the top is often the high point of a stay in Santiago de Cuba.
