About
The Capitol Dome Viewpoint is a roadside stop on Utah State Route 24, close to the town of Torrey, in the south-central part of Utah. It is also known as the Capitol Dome Vista. Pull over here and you can look across to the rounded, white-capped sandstone domes that give Capitol Reef National Park its name.
What you will see
The formations are the reason to stop. Their rounded tops are often compared to the dome of the US Capitol building, and that resemblance is easy to see from the roadside. The pale caps stand out against the darker, layered rock below, so the view has clear shapes and strong contrast even from a parked car.
Light changes the scene considerably. The domes are said to be particularly striking in the morning and evening, when the low sun brings out their colour and texture. If you can, plan your stop for one of those times rather than the middle of the day.
Planning your visit
- Getting there: The viewpoint sits directly on State Route 24, so it is reached by road, by car or on a tour driving through the area.
- Time needed: A visit is usually short, enough to take in the view and take photographs before carrying on.
- Contact: You can call +1-435-425-3791 if you need to check details before you travel.
The viewpoint makes a good first look at Capitol Reef, and it fits easily into a drive through the surrounding landscape. Torrey, the nearest town, is the place to plan the rest of your day around the park.
